The Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) is an international event focusing on central issues regarding the future of the global agri-food industry. This year it was held for the fifth time in January 2013, during the International Green Week (IGW) in Berlin and it was hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

Workshop on NREAP Implementation in the Bioenergy Sector

The event took place on the 22nd of November 2011 in Poznań, Poland during the POLEKO Fairs, an International Trade Fair of Environmental Protection held within the Polish presidency in the European Union. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the challenges and changing policies in the bioenergy energy sector in the framework of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the subsequent National Renewable Energy Action Plans (NREAPs).

International Panel on Sustainable Business Models

On the 22nd of November 2011 about 60 policy makers, researchers and businessmen and women met in Poznań, Poland to discuss models for sustainable business in the bioenergy sector. The idea of Sustainable Business Models using sustainability criteria developed in the Bioenergy Promotion project was the conceptual frame of this international event.

Activities and results of the task 3.1 - Development of criteria for sustainable production of bioenergy

This task is led by the Swedish Board of Agriculture and focuses on the formulation of principles and criteria for a sustainable production of bioenergy. To this purpose, two workshops and one cross-fertilization seminar were held in Sweden and Finland.

Activities and results of the Task 3.2 – Sustainability certification

This task is led by the German Agency of Renewable Resources (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. - FNR) and has basically a three step approach: The first step includes the identification of 11 sustainability initiatives and certification systems for bioenergy used in the Baltic Sea Region. As a second step the underlying criteria covered by those initiatives and certification systems were compared to those criteria developed in the frame of Bioenergy Promotion for the BSR (Task 3.1) and the main differences were identified.

Activities and results of the task 3.4 – Sub-regional policy showcases

Task 3.4 is led by the University of Rostock. The main steps include the selection of policy showcases from eight BSR countries illustrating how sustainability principles and criteria can be integrated into regional and municipal policy frameworks. The Bioenergy Promotion newsletters present a number of showcases in more detail.

Activities and results of the Task 3.3 – Policy assessment and strategy development

Task 3.3 is led by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in cooperation with the Environmental Policy Research Centre, Berlin. The main steps so far include an EU policy assessment, the development of a policy guidance paper and seven (draft) country policy assessments. The guidance paper contains mostly trans-national policy recommendations referring to the formulation and implementation of the National Renewable Energy Action Plans. Based on the paper resp. its draft versions committed project partners in Finland, Estonia, Poland and Latvia prepared targeted policy recommendations for national policy makers and policy advisory organizations in the frame of NREAP formulation processes.

The objective of WP 3 Policy within the project Bioenergy Promotion is to promote a sustainable production and use of biomass for energy purposes. As a part of WP 3, task 3.1 have been working on the development and formulation of principles and criteria for a sustainable production of bioenergy.
