What is a sustainable business model? It consists of two elements: Firstly, those elements that contribute to sustainable development (biodiversity, resources efficiency, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, social and economic aspects). Secondly of those elements that can contribute to the development of a smarter and more holistic business model (holistic approach, integrated resource use, resource without waste and environmental efforts).

The overall objective of the Extension stage of Bioenergy Promotion (2012-2014) was to strengthen key outcomes and results of the Main stage. The sustainability principles and criteria, as well as the strategic plans and concepts prepared for the demo regions, provided the main foundations for the Extension stage project.
The aim of the project Bioenergy Promotion 2, co-financed by the EU Baltic Sea Region Programme, is to promote and increase the sustainable production and use of bioenergy in the Baltic Sea Region. Bioenergy Promotion 2 is a follow-up to the Main stage project Bioenergy Promotion. The Main stage project started in 2009 and concluded in 2012. The initial project consortium consisted of 33 partners, who were involved in the project activities.
The Bioenergy Promotion 2 project is a Baltic 21 Lighthouse Project and supports sustainable production, commercialization and use of bioenergy in the BSR. The project is the extension of the BSR Bioenergy Promotion project with the aim to capitalize the strategic outputs of the main project into the BSR and national political arenas and into the daily grind of utility companies and local and regional administration.
Ludzas Bio - energy is the local district heating company, which is situated in Ludzas town. The Ludza region and the local district company is unique from two aspects: 1) It is the first region where the district heating has been developed based on public-private partnership principles together. 2) Heat Production Company has developed unique flue gas condensation plant for Latvia case. The technique is patented and can ensure up to 20% of energy efficiency if there is appropriate biofuels quality; the capacity of the boiler and combustion conditions.
All companies builds upon creating a customer value perceived bigger than the cost for the service/product. To be able to profitable create this value the company needs to control and guarantee that the production and distribution costs etc in total is less than the total sales revenues. The figure below illustrates the issues that have to be addressed within a business model*. The answer and outcomes of these issues should be handled within the company’s business plan and priorities between actions and allocation of resources.
